My Other Half Is a Pin-Up Model - Confessions of a Back Seater
Ok - I have learned to accept the fact that I am considered more or less
a bike accessory to many folks who don't appreciate the art of back seat
riding. I have even learned to play up this concept and add my own flair
to this unique lifestyle. BUT I never expected that one day, my turf would
be invaded in an entirely different way and by none other than by my "better
half" and driver Kent. Who is now otherwise known as one of the models
for "Mr. January 2004" in the "Men and Their Machines"
calendar printed to raise funds for Virginia Motorcyclists Against Cancer
(VMAC).
How much stepping aside is a lady to take? In my world, the person on
the back seat is the one who is supposed to get all the attention but
how am I supposed to accomplish this, when I know that hanging on a wall
some where is my spouse baring it all I(almost) for the sake of charity?
Just as I was adjusting to having my "accessory" status encroached
upon, insult was added to injury when he was invited to attend an autograph
party. Never in all my days of gracing the back seat had anyone requested
the favor of my attendance, much less requested an autograph. Something
was definitely wrong with this picture!
I began studying him carefully to see if I could learn anything - to
see what he's got that I haven't (beyond the obvious differences between
a man and a woman that is). I knew he knew something was up, especially
when he caught me trying on his chaps and leather to see if I looked better
in it than he did. Having that experiment fail miserably, especially since
I couldn't fit into them, I spent hours searching my mind to figure out
how I could regain my status as the official "eye candy" (such
as it is) of our biking duo.
It didn't take long before I had to concede to defeat. My ego would have
to accept the fact that the "biker babe" was going to be him
and not me. At least I got a chuckle or two at Kent's expense with the
thought of his reaction to this new title.
Discouraged but not completely out of the running, I moved to the next
step - revenge! He now had my job - maybe, just maybe, I should think
about taking his role. I am not sure I am ready to take that final step
of moving up to the front seat quite yet but even thinking about it does
leave me with a certain sense of satisfaction.
For now, I have to be content knowing that when we walk into a room,
all eyes will turn to us but it won't be me they are looking at. At least
I can be proud that the blonde hottie drawing all the attention is on
my arm - and it feels pretty good.

blonde on the left featured in January 2004 is already spoken for.
