And Then I Remembered

By Jeffry L’H. Tank

I had planed on writing up a review of the past year, and then on Dec. 12 my mom passed away. So the last few weeks have been kinda hectic, to say the least.

Next month I’ll finish my article looking back at 2006 but for this month I’ll leave you with this poem written for my Mother.

Her obituary is in the Washington Post.

She was an amazing lady, if I do say so myself, and she touched literally thousands of lives during her 91 years on this planet through both her work and personal relationships and will be greatly missed by all those who knew her. I consider myself extremely fortunate to have been a part of her family. She was sharp of mind and strong willed to the very end and for that I am glad.

And Then I Remembered
Dedicated to my Mother 1915-2006

I called you this morning
But no one ever answered
     And then I remembered

I dropped by your apartment
But no one was home
     And then I remembered

The phone rang
But it wasn’t you on the line
     And then I remembered

I was going to call my sister
To ask her if you were OK
     And then I remembered

I even started planning our next trip
To a town by a river that I knew you’d love
     But then I remembered

I was about to ask your advice
Knowing you always had the right answer
     But then I remembered.

I tired calling again later
But the line was disconnected
     And then I remembered

You have always been there
When I needed you no matter what
     So at first
          I didn’t want to remember

As I sat there thinking about you
Trying to be strong and not to cry
     I Realized how much
          I Needed to remember

While I won’t be able to call you
Or just drop by or ask your advice
     I now know
You will be forever with me
               Because I Remember.
