Highway Safety Corridors

By Kent

On certain stretches of our Virginia highways you may have noticed signs on the side of the road indicating you are entering a Highway Safety Corridor. Hopefully, when you saw the sign you slowed down a bit, perhaps wondering what all the fuss was about. If so, you acted wisely because you just entered an area where a higher than average number of crashes occur. If you're speeding, you've also entered an area where there's a greater likelyhood you'll get a ticket as well as heavier fines.

The Virginia Department of Transportation, the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles, and the Virginia State Police have worked together to identify these places where you're more likely to be involved in a crash. Think about it a minute. If you had a danger detector on your dash and you saw it 's indicator suddenly jump up, wouldn't you slow down and be a bit more alert? Of course you would. So when you enter a Highway Safety Corridor don't just go along with the crowd if they happen to ignore the signs. Slow down, and you may avoid ruining your day. You may even save a life.

At the time of this writing there are three Highway Safety Corridors in Virginia. They are as follows:

  • Interstate 81 Montgomery and Roanoke Counties (from mile marker 127 to mile marker 142),
  • Interstate 95 Northern Virginia (from Route 619 to Route 123), and
  • Interstate 95 Richmond (from Bells Road to Parham Road )
