Making a Mural

By Strader Studio, Chesapeake VA.

There are many ways to make a mural. The following is just "one way" to do it. This particular mural is being done a on 2001 Honda Goldwing's saddlebags and front fairing.

Before beginning work several preliminary steps need to be taken, such as washing the pieces with a strong de-greasing type soap to remove most contaminants, followed by wiping the items down with a wax remover and degreaser. Once this is completed, the items need to be wet sanded. Please note that when working with any solvents and paints, rubber gloves must always be worn as this stuff will absorb through your skin.

Step one. The surface is prepped with 600 grit paper, wet sanded and allowed to dry. The image is then sketched on, using a white Stabilo pencil. This is rough sketched to give me guides and outlines. It also allows for changes to be made easily before the painting begins. Following the sketch, I begin to airbrush using just white paint.

Step two.

Step two. As the images are being airbrushed in white, a more detailed black and white image begins to appear. Also in step two, I begin to build the background colors of the night sky and mountains.

Step three. Once the background is colored in using transparent Kandies, I continue to add detail in black and white working from background to foreground. In step three you will notice the background car and middle car are beginning to take shape. The foreground car still is just a rough airbrushed sketch.
Note: Kandies are clear applications that have a small amount of pigment that give it a color; however, it allows the ground color and shapes to show through.

Step three.

Step four.

Step four. I mask off and add detail to the windows inside the restaurant. Each window is approximately 11/2 to two inches wide. I like to get detailed when airbrushing. You can see the people that are inside the restaurant along with reflections in the glass. Other things I add are people sitting down, a clock on the wall, various cabinets, and other restaurant items.

Step five. I start with the rear-most far away car adding color using toners and candies, giving detail and shape along with the white continuing to work from background to foreground.

Step five.

Step six.

Step six. The background car is done. More detail is now added to the middle car as shown in step six.

Step seven. Candies and toners are overlaid on the middle car. More detail is also given to the background in color.

Step seven.

Step eight.

Step eight. The foreground car is completed in white adding all detail and its initial blue color is added.

NOTE: Strader Studio will be airbrushing at the Chesapeake Cyclemania show on 13 and 14 Sept. One of their paintings will be raffled off and the proceeds donated to the Special Olympics.
