Poker Runs

by Greasy Rider

The last Poker Run I set up was for the 10th anniversary of our Hog chapter. We left from the dealer (card 1), had three stops about 20 miles apart (cards 2,3,4), and the final destination (card 5) which was a restaurant that set up a buffet outdoors. We allowed a sixth wild card to be drawn. The weather cooperated with crystal clear 75 degree day. We had 89 bikes and 111 souls. Zero accidents.

A couple of tips...

  1. Pick four drawing places or stops.. Usually the charity location is the first and/or last stop. Try to pick easy access and egress for safety (large parking lots, etc.)
  2. Get a couple decks of cards.
  3. Have entry forms printed.
  4. Find some poker playing authorities as final judges.
  5. Set a fee for entrance (bike - person ?) ($5-10-20?)
  6. Try to get some publicity such as TV or radio. Any TV/radio personality in your area ride?
  7. Any law enforcement officers ride in your area who would be willing to unofficially help out?
  8. Pick a sunny mild day. If not, consider a rain date.
  9. Avoid stops where alcohol can be purchased unless you want to assume financial responsibility.
  10. Prize for Best Hand, Second Best, and Worst. Announce in reverse order.
Ride Safe!
