Eat, Drink and Be Merry in Barboursville, VA

Barboursville RuinsBarboursville is located just 20 miles outside of Charlottesville. Named after former Virginia Governor James Barbour, this small town is the home of Barboursville Vineyards where visitors can find numerous attractions in a single stop. On the estates 830 acres of rolling hills, you can tour a historic site, eat at an elegant Italian restaurant, participate in wine tasting and spend the night in charming accommodations.

Barboursville RuinsOne of the unique attractions of this vineyard is the historic Barboursville Ruins. This Historic Landmark contains the remains of a mansion designed by Thomas Jefferson in 1822, which burned on Christmas Day in 1884. The once stately mansion was the home of James Barbour. In its day it was considered one of the grandest homes in the county and was known for its unique central octagonal parlor. Today the remains serve as a dramatic backdrop for the Four County Players’ presentation of “Shakespeare at the Ruins” during August weekends. In addition, visitors are allowed to take self-guided tours of the grounds during normal operating hours.

Barboursville RuinsThe main attraction of the vineyards, beside the spectacular view, is the wine tasting room. In this northern Italian style farmhouse, you can taste more than 15 different wines. For a small fee you will receive a souvenir glass, which will entitles you to free future wine tasting. If you prefer you can just sit by the fire, peruse the gift shop or spend time over looking the scenery of the vineyards and the Blue Ridge. Guided tours of the winery are offered on Saturday and Sunday.

Complete you visit with an elegant lunch or dinner at the Palladio Restaurant. The restaurant features cuisine from northern Italy and provides the perfect setting for a romantic interlude. Reservations are suggested during lunch and required during dinner.

Barboursville RuinsAfter a fine meal, why not linger on the premises a little longer and let the unique setting of vineyards and the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains continue to work its magic on you? Barboursville offers accommodations at the historic 1804 Inn and the Vineyard Cottage. Each provides a cozy and charming atmosphere for the perfect getaway within walking distance from all the attractions the vineyard has to offer.

Barboursville VineyardBarboursville Vineyards offers year round activities such as live music and "barrel tasting", special occasion dinners and holiday activities such as an Open House and holiday wreath making workshop to help you get into the holiday spirit. Regardless of the time of year, there is always something special to capture your interest.
